Often times, customers want to know the difference between custom cabinetry, semi-custom cabinetry and stock cabinetry. Here are a couple of very straight forward definitions on the topic:

Custom Cabinetry

"Custom" means built to project-specifications. All dimensions, material, finishes and hardware are choosen per clients prefrences.

Semi-Custom Cabinetry

"Semi-custom" means selecting products from a library of cabinets with standard sizes. There are a variety of styles, quality standards and specifications to choose from.

Stock Cabinetry

"Stock" means one size fits all, what you see is what you get. There is a catalog of sizes, you can't change anything, and they are typically not made to order but warehoused.

A big theme this year is "Use Green to Grow Your Business‏".

This year the fair will be July 20-23, 2011. They offer business-building solutions, the next-generation technology and critical knowledge targeted specifically to woodworkers.

Millwork Glossary

Appliance Garage - A common name for a roll-up or single door unit placed under a wall cabinet. Roll-up doors are sometimes called “tambours“.

Bead - A small double groove routed out around the perimeter of a cabinet frame or door giving the appearance of an additional rounded narrow molding.

Beaded Panel - a panel with a vertical double groove routed at intervals across it's width.

Beaded Inset - a style in which the cabinet door closes within the frame which has a double groove routed around its perimeter.

Bevel - The slant of a surface, as on a beveled edge door.

Classic Crown Molding - A wide, intricately carved piece of molding usually used on top of wall cabinets or furniture.

Concealed Hinge - A hinge that is attached to the door and the inside end panel of a cabinet, making it not visible from the exterior of the cabinet.

Continuous Pull - The door handle is an integral part of the door style and runs the full width of the door. The handle is not a separate piece of decorative hardware.

Dentil Molding - A pattern of tooth-like cuts often used on trim moldings.

Diagonal Cabinet - A cabinet used to span across a corner. Other terms for this type of cabinet are corner wall cabinet.

Dovetail - A method of fastening boards together by fitting pieces shaped like a wedge into like opposing cavities. Used most often in drawer assembly.

Engineered Wood - Wood fibers and/or particles that have been bonded with synthetic resins under heat and pressure are formed into panels or boards. Engineered wood is more dimensionally stable and easier to machine than solid wood or plywood. Grain-free surfaces yield smoother surface bonding of laminates.

Exposed Hinge - A hinge attached to the door and the front frame of the cabinet, making it visible from the exterior.

Flute - A groove routed into a wood part. Flutes may have a functional purpose, as with fluted dowels, into which glue is disbursed, or a decorative purpose as in fluted fillers.

Full-overlay - Door style which leaves very little reveal of the frame or front edge around the perimeter.

Knife Hinge -One of many hinge types for cabinets, the knife hinge is inserted into a slot routed into the side of a door. The hinge is attached to both the door frame and the door with screws which adjust to properly align the door on the frame. Some knife hinges are visible from the front of the cabinet; others are not.

Knot - A naturally occurring whorl in lumber created where a branch extended from a tree.

Laminate - A surface covering, usually affixed to a substrate with glue. May be any thin surface material. This word does not necessarily indicate "plastic" or "melamine" as is commonly believed. Paper or aluminum may also be a laminate.

MDF - Medium Density Fiberboard. An engineered wood offering an extremely tight, smooth surface. Exceptionally stable.

Melamine - A low pressure laminate thermofused to a smooth substrate.

Millwork - Machined woodwork.

Miter - Two angles cut and joined forming a continuous profile.

Mullion Door - Mullion doors have vertical and horizontal wood rails within the frame forming a grid pattern.

O-gee - Edge trim or cut characterized by one 180 degree radius bead extending further out than another below it.

Onlay Appliqué - An intricately carved wood decorative element installed on the surface of a cabinet.

Overlay - The degree or amount a door overlays the frame or front edge of a cabinet.

Plywood - Thinly cut layers of wood veneer cross laminated with adhesive between layers.

Soffit - Also called drop ceiling. The underside of a part or member of a building.

Stud - One of the smaller uprights in the framing of the walls of a building to which sheathing, paneling, or laths are fastened

Tongue and Groove - A projection along the edge of a board inserted into a corresponding groove and fixed with glue and /or a metal pin. Other terms for this type of joint include, dado and mortise and tenon.

Thermofoil - Flexible, 100% vinyl with contact adhesive on its underside. Applied to smooth engineered wood using heat and pressure.

Veneer - A thinly sliced layer of wood applied to a substrate.

Why should consumers choose custom-designed kitchen cabinets?

In a custom designed kitchen, the customer gets what they want, rather than having to choose from a standard selection. A custom designed kitchen utilizes all available space, whereas, a pre-fabricated cabinet may or may not fit. Using custom cabinets enhances the beauty and increases the efficiency of the kitchen by eliminating gaps and wasted space. In many cases, custom cabinets are as affordable as prefabricated.

What are the most important elements in your approach to kitchen design?

At J&C Cabinets, we first establish the customer’s budget, then design cabinets to fit within that budget. Most of the time, customer’s ideas are bigger than their budget, that’s when custom design is so important. We can design and build nice kitchens to meet any budget.

In what ways do you involve your client in the design process?

The customer is very involved in the design phase of the kitchen. Their specifications and request are incorporated into the kitchen layout. We use KCDW, an Autocad based software package, to provide customers with a detailed, 3-D drawing of their kitchen. After reviewing the drawing final approval, the project is started.

What role does craftsmanship play in kitchen design?

Craftsmanship plays a huge role in custom cabinet making. To achieve the customer’s goals, and stay within budget, we rely on the experience, imagination and craftsmanship of a dedicated team of employees. Experience and craftsmanship are established over time, not purchased with a business license. Lots of people can build a cabinet, but a true craftsman produces a cabinet that will last a lifetime.

- Initial in-home or in-office consultation.

- Measurements taken or given to us by client.

- Estimate and spec sheet completed.

Step 2: Design

10% Deposit of Project Due.

- In-depth renderings showing all the specifications for the clients approval using the award winning KCDW software program.

- Selection of material from a wide range of quality woods.

- Sample board completed.

Step 3: Fabrication

Additional 40% Deposit of Project Due

- In-house fabrication of all cabinetry.

- Custom finishing completed, ensuring rich and lasting surfaces for years to come.

Step 4: Installation/Delivery/Pick Up

If Installation is Included: Additional 40% Deposit of Project Due at Delivery and the Remaining 10% is Due Once Installation is Completed.

If Delivered or Picked Up: Remaining 50% deposit of project due.

Cleaning your cabinets...

I know it is not your favorite activity, but here are some helpful hints on how to care for your cabinetry ...

When trying to keep your cabinets looking their best it is recommended that you clean your cabinets as needed with a lint-free cloth. It should be dampened with mild detergent or soap and water. After cleaning you should dry them immediately with a lint-free cloth.

Wipe up spills, spatters and water marks as they occur, keeping the surface dry.

Use an emulsion-nonsolvent cleaner and polish, as designed for kitchen cabinets, on all clean surfaces as needed.

Avoid using scouring pads or powdered cleansers as these may scratch and penetrate the surface, allowing food or moisture to enter and cause deterioration of the finish.

How to Measure your Kitchen

Make a sketch of the room. Always start from the left side of the room on the first wall you plan on adding cabinets and work from left to right.

Measure the overall length of each wall and record it on your hand drawn layout.
Measure the ceiling height in at least four locations, from floor to ceiling.

Starting from the corner on your left - measure to the center of outlets, plumbing, and vents.

Starting from the corner on your left - measure the distance to any breaks in the wall such as, windows and doors. In addition to measuring from side to side be sure to measure from the bottom of any window trim to the floor and the top of the window trim to the ceiling.

Tip: On any opening that has molding - start your measurement of the wall from the corner to the outside edge or the molding.

Appliances

Be sure to record the dimensions of each appliance. Start by measuring the Width, Height, and Depth.

8 Kitchen Design Tips for a More Efficient Kitchen

One of our favorite magazine Woodshop News had a great article in this month's addition: "Kitchen Concepts for the Builder". These are just a few of the helpful tips that we thought would be useful to anyone designing or building their kitchen.

Miscellaneous Considerations

- Doors and appliance doors should not interfere with one another.
- You should not have a refrigerator or a pantry in the middle of your countertop.
- If there is only one sink in the kitchen, you should locate it directly across from the stove.
- There should be two trash receptacles per work station.
- Use a minimum of 150 cfm exhaust fan for the kitchen.
- Countertop corners should be round or clipped for safety reasons.
- At least one corner cabinet should have a functional storage devise.
- Work stations should have appropriate task lighting.
